Yesterday evening my Mum and I hopped on a train up to London to attend a really unique event… a clothes swap! Hosted by Niomi Smart and with all ticket proceeds going to Clothes Aid charity, it was a chance to bring your unwanted pieces of clothing and swap them with other ladies’ items. Basically refreshing your wardrobe without buying more stuff which, as we all know deep down, comes with quite the financial and environmental cost.
Upon arrival at the venue, a hotel in Shoreditch, you handed in your clothes and got given a ticket corresponding with how many items you’d brought in. Then, with complementary glass of wine in hand, it was time to get shopping. There were rails and rails of beautiful clothes that would otherwise have been stuck in the back of a cupboard and going to waste. It really was a case of one woman’s trash is another’s treasure!
The event was such a brilliant idea on so many accounts; people, generally speaking, love new clothes but the process of making these clothes comes with such a toll on the planet, using about 1800 gallons of water to make just one pair of cotton jeans, its a statistic that the Earth can’t keep up for much longer. This way, everyone at the event went home with lots of new clothes at next to no environmental detriment! Second hand shopping and swapping with friends is a brilliant way to refresh your style while doing your bit for sustainability.
It was also so great to meet Niomi and to chat to her for a bit about the event and living a more sustainable lifestyle. She was beyond lovely and obviously really cares about doing her bit for the environment pro-actively, not just talking about doing something.
I also go to meet and chat with Venetia Falconer who is another of my online faves and she too was as wonderful as anything!
So after a successful evening of shopping, swapping and chatting it was off home with dreams and ideas of how I can practically start taking steps to live a greener and less consumer driven life… What a wonderful event!
